Credit Card Transactions
Some features of this site enable credit card transactions. These features are completely voluntary to members. They include the purchasing of event registrations, merchandise purchases, online donations, membership purchases or the payment of other types of fees through the site. The operators of this site would like to assure you that measures have been taken to make such transactions secure for its members.

UVA Peer Communities Policy Statement

The University of Virginia maintains a series of online networking web sites and directories in which users can maintain biographical information for the purpose of receiving communications from the University, finding contact information for UVA friends, receiving career networking assistance (if a UVA student or alum), or updating email subscriptions. These sites and services, hereafter referred to as UVA Peer Communities, are specifically designed to facilitate communication among members of the UVA community for personal or University-related purposes.

Privacy & Security

The University of Virginia has taken all reasonable precautions to secure your personal information. UVA Peer Communities are password protected to allow access by registered University alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. The online directories are open only to peer groups (e.g., alumni, students and faculty). Furthermore, these communities securely incorporate the latest encryption technology.

Although these precautions should effectively protect any personal information available from abuse or outside interference, a certain degree of privacy risk is faced any time information is shared over the Internet. Through the "My Public Profile" feature, individuals can control the nature and amount of information available to other registered users of the peer directories.

Web site activities and email communications such as newsletters may be used to track trends and interests. However, we only use this information to more effectively tailor your online experience to your interests. You may opt-out of particular email correspondence by following the unsubscribe instructions in the email or replying with an indication to "unsubscribe."

Policy and Guidelines for Proper Use

The guidelines and policies that are used by the University of Virginia to govern conduct, particularly conduct that occurs in an online environment, apply to all UVA Peer Communities. As members of the extended University community, users are expected to adhere to the University's Information Technology and Communication Policies, the guidelines set forth in the University's Ethics in Computer Usage policy, and to conduct themselves within the spirit of the Honor System.

Information available through UVA Peer Communities may be used for specific personal and University-related purposes only. Use of these sites for any commercial, public or political mailing is strictly prohibited. Prohibited uses of the information contained in UVA Peer Communities include but are not limited to:

  • Advertising and solicitations for commercial services
  • Cold-calling of any kind or unsolicited mass-mailings
  • Activities that are illegal or fraudulent
  • Uses that inaccurately imply endorsement, approval, or sponsorship by the University of Virginia, its Alumni Association, or their officers
  • Uses that can be confused with official communications of UVA, its Alumni Association, or their officers
  • Mailings of any kind using a false identification
  • Activities that violate other users' privacy such as granting access to the system or distributing information obtained from the services to those who cannot access UVA Peer Communities on their own 
  • Posting of obscene materials or use of obscene or vulgar language, as defined by the University (Definition of obscene), hate speech or harassment, or use of abusive or threatening language of any kind
  • Creation of profane, fraudulent, or obscene aliases or Login Names.

Neither the University of Virginia nor the Alumni Association is responsible for screening communications or postings, and neither the University nor the Association will actively monitor the use of UVA Peer Communities. The University, however, reserves the right to reorganize or delete any postings or communications and may at its discretion reassign a discussion topic's ownership. The University expects community members to exhibit the same level of respect for others in this forum as in any other University-related venue. For this reason, it is essential that the users of UVA Peer Communities report any abuses or misuse by sending an email message to If administrators determine that a user's participation in a web site may create a liability for the University or the Association, or that the user has violated the policies set forth herein, the University reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to take actions against the user. The University reserves the right to expel a user and to deny a user further access to any of its UVA Peer Communities if such user violates these policies or any applicable laws or regulations. The University may deny access to UVA Peer Communities to any individual at any time.

Liability and Indemnity

The reliability of the information available through UVA Peer Communities is largely dependent upon the actions of registrants. The University and the Alumni Association can make no representations about the accuracy, reliability, completeness, or timeliness of this information.

The University does not warrant that UVA Peer Communities will operate error-free or that the sites and its server are free of computer viruses or other harmful material. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the University disclaims all warranties, including the warranties of merchantability, non-infringement, and fitness for particular purpose. In no event shall the University or the Alumni Association be liable for any damages whatsoever, including, without limitation, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages, resulting from the use of or inability to use information or materials available in UVA Peer Communities.

By using any of the UVA Peer Communities, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the University, the Alumni Association, and their respective agents from and against any and all losses, claims, damages, costs, and expenses that may arise from your use of the web sites or your breach of these policies. The University will provide notice to you of any such action or claim, and reserves the right to participate, at your expense, in the investigation, settlement, and defense of any such action or claim.

The University and the Alumni Association reserve the right to discontinue any or all online services at any time or to revise the terms and policies of this acceptable use agreement.
